This song makes me remember that old adage “it takes a village” and when it comes to children, it really does. To raise children, to help children become who they are meant to be is an amazing journey. But what always haunted me growing up, as I grew up with my grandmother raising us, my brothers and I, was how much she actually sacrificed to be a mother and a grandmother all at the same time. And how much she never really got to experience her truth in the fullness of her being. So this song goes out to mothers and letting them know it’s actually OK and alright to release their children…they’ve done the biggest work, just by being mothers, and I wanted to celebrate them, by allowing them to be free. Momma’s Gotta Go.
I started playing piano at church as kid with a love of gospel and jazz. As I grew older I found my love of hip hop and R&B songs. I like to describe myself as a vessel of sound and experience music in spirit and colors. Everything is an instrument to me.
The past few years have been magical- releasing records with my band Painted Shield, releasing my EP, opening up for Kingfish and recording a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR to name a few. We continue to do big things-I keep creating and love to feel your energy at live performances!
